Loving Language: Secondary Edition

Overview

Children who struggle to talk and understand language face significant challenges:

  • They are 6 times more likely to fall behind in English by age 11
  • 11 times more likely to fall behind in Maths
  • At increased risk of mental health difficulties
  • And twice as likely to be unemployed as adults

Indeed, one study shows that up to half of secondary students with SLCN go unidentified, compared to 29% in primary schools.

(The Communication Trust, 2014)

Our ‘Loving Language – Secondary Edition’ training is designed to help secondary school staff recognise and support pupils with a wide range of speech, language and communication needs (SLCN).

This session will help you confidently spot less obvious signs of SLCN in older students, understand how language links to behaviour, SEMH, and learning, and give you practical strategies and case studies to use across different subjects.

Whether you're a teacher, TA, or SENCO, this training will equip you with the knowledge and tools to make a lasting difference for students who might otherwise go unnoticed.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify and understand the complex skills that work together to facilitate the development of robust language skills.
  • Understand the links between SLCN, behaviour and mental health.
  • Identify core strategies that work across all aspects of SLCN.
  • Understand how different aspects of SLCN can present in different ways and plan support for three “real” pupils.
